Position Overview

Navistar Research and Development is seeking a Senior Electric Vehicle Development Engineer with experience in vehicle powertrain calibration development. This role is onsite at our WHQ, in Lisle, IL and can involve up to 25% travel to our engineering facilities across the US and Europe.

The Senior Electric Vehicle Development Engineer will be responsible for the calibration development of Navistar’s vehicle platforms such as the BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) & FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle). The responsibility in this role spans across all chassis modules that is part of the powertrain operation. The individual will be responsible for all modules and components of the BEV to develop and optimize the calibration to meet both performance and hardware/component requirements. Familiarity with BEV subsystems such as the battery thermal, charging, propulsion, torque & energy management is highly desired. Experience in using Mathworks, ETAS and Vector based software for data acquisition and systems debug will be helpful in this role. Although this role will primarily focus on the BEV domain, candidate should be flexible to work on other vehicle propulsion systems such as FCEV as needed.
Responsibilities

  • Develop component and system level calibrations for seamless operation of the overall vehicle.
  • Develop calibrations to meet vehicle level performance as listed in Program Functional Objectives.
  • Coordinate and participate in vehicle test trips to support calibration development goals.
  • Collaborate with ePowertrain, hardware, and software & controls teams in system, sub-system and software design reviews, identify gaps and provide feedback based on program deliverables.
  • Troubleshoot issues during development, validation, production, and post-production phases of the program.


Performs data analysis & reports results as below:

  • Visualizes data using software tools (ETAS, Canalyzer, Matlab) for effective communication of the problem to management
  • Utilizes established templates for test data report outs and improve current methods for effective interpretation of the data
  • Maintains performance reports and calibration settings of all test trips for calibration release and traceability purposes
  • Analyzes test data to draw conclusions and plan out next set of testing
  • Documents conclusions and summaries in report or presentation format and conducts data reviews/summaries with team
  • Documents significant issues and resolutions via standard channels
  • Provides any potential design change recommendations through formal report with supporting data
  • Assists in the calibration of electric powertrain diagnostics
  • Reviews Diagnostic service procedures, service tool function and service manual to assist service teams

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science
  • At least 8 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience
  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science
  • At least 6 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience
  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • PhD in Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science
  • At least 3 years of experience in product design/development and/or computer science experience
  • At least 1 year leading others in engineer/design activities

Desired Skills

  • Strong communication skills in person, on the phone and by email
  • Ability to read software documents and interpret underlying logic and identify calibration tradeoffs
  • Familiar with CAN based datalinks and reading communication busses
  • Good understanding of the high voltage systems and posses experience working around high voltage systems
  • Flexible and adaptable in a rapidly changing environment. Ability to work under time and resource constraints
  • Become proficient with the tools used for calibration development, data analysis, and understanding the control system(s) such as:
    • ETAS INCA, Matlab/Simulink, CANalyzer, etc.
    • Utilize established engineering practices and software to document workflow and track calibration updates via change control process
    • CCR (calibration change request), Cal compare, DVP&R, FMEA
    • On site Engineering prototype build and support
    • Ability to travel ~25%
    • Possesses or willing to acquire a commercial driver’s license (CDL)
