Tim Cook steps down after 15 years at the helm as Apple begins a new chapter under longtime hardware leader John Ternus

Apple has officially entered a new leadership era.
As of September 1, 2026, John Ternus has taken over as Chief Executive Officer of Apple, succeeding Tim Cook after Cook’s 15-year tenure leading one of the world’s most influential technology companies. Cook has moved into the role of Executive Chairman of Apple’s board.
The transition marks one of the most significant leadership changes in Apple’s modern history and comes at a critical moment for the technology industry, particularly as artificial intelligence reshapes competition across hardware, software and consumer technology.
From Hardware Chief to Apple’s Top Job
Ternus is a longtime Apple veteran. He joined the company in 2001 on its Product Design team and became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013. In 2021, he joined Apple’s executive team as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.
During his career at Apple, Ternus has been closely involved with hardware development across products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods.
Before joining Apple, Ternus worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
His appointment therefore represents a move from one of Apple’s most technically focused leadership positions into the company’s highest executive role.
The End of the Tim Cook Era
Tim Cook became Apple’s CEO in 2011, succeeding co-founder Steve Jobs.
Under Cook, Apple expanded dramatically beyond its traditional hardware businesses, building major businesses around services, wearables and digital ecosystems. Apple says its market capitalization grew from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion during Cook’s tenure, while annual revenue increased from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025.
Cook’s next role will keep him closely connected to Apple. As Executive Chairman, he is expected to remain involved in selected areas of the company while supporting the transition to the new leadership structure.
Why Ternus’ Appointment Matters
Ternus takes charge at a time when Apple faces an increasingly competitive technology landscape.
Artificial intelligence has become one of the industry’s defining battlegrounds, with major technology companies investing aggressively in AI models, products and infrastructure. Apple has faced growing pressure to demonstrate that its AI strategy can compete with rivals.

Apple announced the succession in April following what it described as a long-term succession-planning process. The company’s board unanimously approved Ternus’ appointment.
Ternus will also serve on Apple’s board, while Arthur Levinson transitions from chairman to lead independent director.
For Apple, the immediate challenge will be balancing continuity with the need for fresh momentum.
The company has an established hardware ecosystem, enormous global reach and a massive installed base. At the same time, the next phase of technology competition will demand faster innovation in AI, devices and services.
What Comes Next for Apple?
Ternus’ first major test as CEO will be closely watched by investors, customers and the wider technology industry.
Apple is expected to place significant attention on the next generation of its devices and its evolving AI strategy. The company’s upcoming September product event will also be the first major Apple launch taking place under Ternus’ leadership.
The bigger question, however, extends beyond the next product launch:
Can John Ternus preserve Apple’s extraordinary strengths while accelerating the company into the next era of artificial intelligence and computing?
